Gaps in NI contribution years and unpaid self assessment

I am 60 and have 20 full years of contributions. Some of the missing years relate to periods of unpaid self assessment from self employment when cashflow was tight. Will paying these to HMRC now automatically fill in the gaps for the related years in my NI record?

Suggest you register at gov.uk and then take a look at your NI records.

It should show all the years from the age of 16 and if they can be filled along with the cost of doing so.
  • Thanks yes I've done that. But my question is, if I settle my HMRC SA account, which also includes an element of missed NI, will that fill in the related missing years at the same time?

Doubtful as only Class 2 NI, not Class 4, counts for State Pension purposes and when paying via Self Assessment I think you are meant to pay on time.

You probably need a separate discussion with HMRC about older years where paying Class 2 might be a possibility.

I recently worked out that I had a missing year in 2013-14, which confused me as I submitted a tax return and paid Class 4 etc. Turns out that they’d sent me a letter asking for £70-odd of Class 2 contributions which I never got as I moved house. They said it was too late to pay Class 2 now so if I wanted to fill the year I’d have to pay at the Class 3 rate (£600 odd), which I declined.

In short, I suspect the answer is No.
