Shipping refunded

I purchased 2 orders from a company and returned both fully. My shipping costs were deducted from my refund. I believed I should have received these back. I approached the company and they said I ticked the box sizing issue and should have ticked I changed my mind!! I replied to them saying i had changed my mind but also the sizing was out. They then replied I should also have written to tell them I was refusing the order within 14 days and because I didn't I wasn't applicable. Although I'd returned the goods immediately. Feels like lawyers twisting everything for the company to avoid returning shipping fees, but what's correct in relation to this??
