Discuss . . .
Yes... I know this. I can see that this is going to be difficult, as it usually always turns out to be. It's as if to most places I ask a question, my question always gets deflected of the answer I'm seeking. It's as if the person answering is trying to avoid giving an answer.
I'm asking out of simple curiosity as this is soon going to hit Martin's Money ~Savings Expert's site a an interesting discussion . . . ( http://www.moneysavingexpert.com )
If I use my BT phone to call a UK geographic land line the rate is = FREE per minute.
If I use VoIP to make a call to a UK geographic land line the rate is = 1p per minute.
Still having the BT land line rate as free is fine as I find using VoIP from a PC a pain to set-up for a simple call. Especially when the computer is turned off.
I'm only curious . . .

Thank you for your mail.
Please check VoIP calls within UK will be charged at the rate of 1p/min.
We hope this has answered your question.

I'm interested to know why you feel the need to almost threaten 1899 with a discussion on MSE, for the second time?0
-
Here we go. Pick on me time. Will you all just do and shove your knives where the sun don't shine, but not in my direction please.
If you read what I sent to 1899, it's not a complaint. I'm just curious and I'm ASKING, or is asking a offence carrying a death sentence. Also, it is a pain for me to crank up my computer to make a call on VoIP. I do turn the computer off when I'm not using it to save on the electricity bill.
I'll cut-n-paste the details from 1899's site as it stands as I send this reply.
From the front page:UK fixed lines 0.0 !!UK National Calls (land lines) 1
Now children. Please stop attacking me. It's just a discussion and nothing more. I'm curious on what others think and I have no interest in a flaming session. Life's too short for that.0 -
Not attacking just asking the question as to why you mention MSE to 1899.0
-
I assume the idea of MSE is to help people save money. I'm under the assumption that because an indirect telecoms company can bypass the legacy telephone company to some degree that VoIP should be cheaper.
For instance, and I'm not sure if it's now changed, through Call1899 call a USA land line and it's free-per-minute, but use your BT phone and it costs half-a-penny a minute, which is still darn good value! No way can I argue with that.
With this latest plan it seems to shoot in the foot the idea of `establishing a call over the Internet is the cheaper option`.
Out of curiosity, I'm questioning the logic. The mass media is saying one thing, and Call1899 is saying; "nope". Difficult logic for me to understand so I thought about starting a discussion.
It seems that idea may have been a mistake, where I should have just kept quiet and not started this thread in the first place, so, if you deem that it's out of place, erase this discussion thread and I ain't going to question anything ever again. Maybe you should also tell Martin that questioing the fuzzy logic of companies may be a bad idea.
Why has this threaded ended up like this right at it's birth? Simple. One word in post #3: "threaten".
It was not a threat. Never intended to be a threat, but in my recent dealings with Call18866 and Call1899, skeleton team or not, whatever can be called as customer services is just not there. I can't fault the service as it seems the outfit that runs the technology know exactly what they are doing, but the front people that run Call1899 and Call18866, either ain't that helpful, don't care or something is going wrong where they are getting so many enquiries that the small team can't cope.
Of the latter is true, why would there be so many enquiries when the system works near perfectly?
An interesting set of questions and puzzles, but it's exiting the topic of this thread.
I'm simply puzzled why what's supposed to be the the cheapest `voice transport` all of a sudden is not the cheapest. Could this be the start of a trend where the legacy phone companies will win in the end and VoIP ends up becoming the dearest option. Well, maybe not all over the globe, but in some places.
Who knows.... Yet another interesting question.0 -
I'm not expert on this but charging 1p/min VoIP and 0p/min over PSTN doesn't make any as I believe the former doesn't even use the telephone network on your end. You're paying for the data transmitted, not the telephone company so it has to be cheaper.
I guess you have a case to contact trading standards however I wouldn't because for the time being I'd rather 1899 had as little has as possible.
Also if you have a nice router, get a SIPphone and read about the server settings on other threads on this board. There's no need to leave your computer on.
Even if VoIP calls are 1p/min, it's still a very viable homephone solution for people who need to recieve calls to a UK geographical number and use cable and not ADSL to connect to the internet.0 -
Also it may be worth mse asking 1899 for an official response as to why 0p/min UK VoIP calls isn't economically viable, yet POTS is.0

www.voipbuster.com (sister company of call18866/1899) offer free calls to UK,USA,AUSTRALIA, france spain germany and lots of other country landlines but theres a 1minute call length limit, to get passed this limit credit ur account with 1 euro so the calls will be free and unlimited as long as you don't use up the 1 euro with chargeable calls. its a bargain0

I can't quite see the point of complaining that the service you anyway feel less inclined to use is more expensive0

PLEASE CEASE PICKING ON ME! Which part of of the word `Discuss` do people on this forum have a problem with? I'm so sorry for evey TRYING to start an intellectual discussion. How about the forum moderator just wipe this discussion thread off this forum.
My mistake. I didn't know what the hell I was doing starting this thread in the first place.
[END]0 -
Also note the cost of calling a mobile, on 1899 VoIP is 15p/min whereas via PSTN it is 10p/min max.
I think the reason why people are 'picking on you' is the abrupt way you ask people to discuss issues. Just putting the word 'discuss' is far from polite and is very very aggressive. This is something you need to look at if this is how you go about discussing problems outside the internet. You could have easily put "What are your thoughts on the price difference between calls made to UK landlines via 1899's VoIP service and their PSTN service?'. This is a much friendlier approach and therefore wouldn't of made anyone feel threatened. It's PAC not PAC Code, it's MAC not MAC Code, it's PIN not PIN Number, it's ATM not ATM Machine, it's LCD not LCD Display, it's DVD not DVD disc... It's no one not noone, It's a lot not alot, It's got not gotten... Panini is the plural of panino - there is no S!!(OK my English isn't great, the sciences, maths & IT are my strong points!)0
