old savings account

I have found an old savings book of mine with the last withdrawal in 1998. The balance in the account is £ 47.80. It is a Leeds Permanent Building Society Cashbuilder account. How can I find out if this account still is active etc.

It looks like they merged with the Halifax BS (now bank) in 1995, so contacting the Halifax would presumably be the first thing to try.1
