No letter yet but money just dropped into my account this morning!2

My partner died in Feb 2012 and we were living together or 13 years at the time but never married . At the time i was told i was not eligible for any support as we were not married . One of her colleagues reached out to me on the 23rd of August to advise me of the new law that entitles unmarried parents to an allowance / backpay ..
I applied the next day after doing some research to ensure it was all legit and above board ..
Heard nothing or weeks ..
My circumstance were that i had moved the following year as the children did not want to live in the same house anymore (they were 8 and 10). Since then i have not lived with anyone ( like we were married - as i thought it would affect the children too much) This appears to be the main criteria they are looking at ****
On the 26th September I received a letter saying i was eligible and the amount that i was due in Back pay .(broken down by year and amount )... I was shocked as it was over 30k .. the following day i had notification that I had a pending payment of just over 30k due to come in to my bank ..
All i would say is that be careful as this is subject to tax and you have to pay it yourself when the tax man sends you a letter ..
I have had to pay just over12 k to the tax man ( Not really bothered as this was money i never expected following the death of the children's mum )
my only advice would be , be truthful on the application and don't over embellish as they do check electoral registers .
Good luck in your claims !!!

About 5 weeks or me .. I have posted my story lower downLeelee21 said:I applied for widowed parents allowance 3 weeks ago and haven't heard anything back yet. How long does it take for a claim to be assessed?1 -
Yeah that isnt right as my partner passed away in 2012 .. they should be able to give you a step by step account o any issues .. Mind you it is a very small team i was told of people getting to the claims in orderHadders68 said:Hi all, spoke to somebody else today who was far more sensible! She is getting it reviewed again today as she agreed, the update I was given didn't sound right. Fingers crossed!0 -
I too have recently applied, Im so pleased for you Leelee21 - my story is similar toy ours, my partner passed away in 2014, suddenly, leaving me and my 9 year old daughter. I have moved house too as too many painful memories. I have never wanted anyone else so it has always just been me and my daughter. I've been told a 6 week waiting time so keeping everything crossed.
You say, of the 30K awarded to have to pay 13K in tax - how does that work - do you have it pay it back immediately or does your employer change your tax code and take it back little every month? would be good to understand more0 -

I got issued with 4 Tax bills totalling 11.5k from HMRC,, so payed those within the 6-8 week timescale they gave me
Then my tax code was changed with work to pay more ... I had only used a little of the money before the tax came so no issues .. I would suggest wait a few weeks before you spend a lot .. It wasnt like i new i was getting that much . Kids got the most of it on things they had missed out on. like a decent holiday that is happening this year.hope you had had your money by now

You need to have been in receipt of child benefit at 31 August 2018.
