Hello MoneySavingExpert community,

I'm seeking advice on how to accurately calculate the value of my car under some unique conditions. The car in question is a 2005 Honda Civic, 5-door with manual gears. It was purchased brand new and has only clocked 7,500 miles.

Here's the twist: The car was stolen a few years ago from its parking slot in a gated area but was recovered by the police and returned. It has been sitting unused for about 7 years now. I still possess the original V5C (Vehicle Log Book), confirming my ownership.

Given these circumstances, how would you recommend I go about calculating its current value?

Any insights or recommendations would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you in advance!

It's really based on condition. Sitting around is never good for cars. Had it been kept indoors in the dry or has it been sat outside or in a leaky garage?

If it's a bog standard Civic, rather than the type R for instance, I suspect its value is round about the scrap value.

As above. The unknown costs of getting it back on the road will put off most buyers.

BTW the V5C is not proof of ownership. It tells you so in big bold red letters near the top of page 1.

Do you want to know the value because you want to sell it? If so I'd agree with the others that it's going to be very difficult to do however it's valued, I'd be inclined to put it on ebay for sale as spares, then it's up to the buyer what they do with it.

Depends on if you are going to spend the money on getting it road legal. Or you are simply going to sell it as Spares or Repair...

But above post is a very good question...

Stolen, recovered and returned then kept for another 7 years suggests that there was no insurance claim, but clarification would be useful.

If it's been sitting for 7 years it's not going to be worth much - it's not going to have any service history, MOT history (so buyers will be able to see it's been off road).
Even without any damage from the theft it's going to need a lot of work to get it in a saleable condition since it presumably hasn't even been run for those 7 years?

If it's in good cosmetic condition, then you may get decent money for some of the parts to other owners - a barely used interior could be pretty valuable.

Put twelve months MOT on it, stick it on Ebay with lots of photo's and see what happens.

Did it have any insurance markers against it ?

A car thats been sat that long might have niggles but should not be the disaster some will try and make out. Unless it's a Type R then there is a really small brave market for this sort of car, its far from a classic and the super low miles and lack of service history will put most off.
