Widowed Parents Allowance - Thank you Martin!

My late partner passed away suddenly 15 years ago, and as we weren’t married I struggled to qualify for any support despite having our young child (and his 3 children from a previous relationship) to take care of.

I saw the article about the change in law which meant I may have a backdated claim, but assumes that at best I’d maybe get a few hundred or even in my wildest dreams a couple of thousand pounds.

This morning I received this letter! Over £35,000! 🤯

I’ve still not quite picked myself up off the floor! As a woman now fast approaching retirement age, having lost my business due to the pandemic leading to bankruptcy, and with no financial security for my later years this really is life changing! Thank you Martin and MSE! ❤️

Just a word of caution perhaps and sorry to bring you back down to earth- if you were made bankrupt most of this backdated money presumably predates the bankruptcy?

Is there a risk the OR could put a claim in if they get wind of it? Or is this allowance exempt?

You really need to check. Or someone on here can confirm? It's also income that would have been paid to you during your IPA period.

Reason I ask is someone started a thread recently where their mother got their entire lump sum pension seized recently because they started paying into it before their bankruptcy 25 years ago.

Don't forget that depending on what other taxable income you have in those years you could have some tax to pay to HMRC.

Maybe not for any years prior to bankruptcy though?

    Sstill a nice windfall 😀
