Grants of up to £2,000 will now be made available to all Londoners who wish to scrap any car or motorcycle that is non-compliant with the zone's emissions standards.

The grants were previously only available to child benefit recipients, disabled people and those on low incomes - but from Monday 21 August, everyone in the capital can apply.

And what is their trade in going to be worth??

Nothing.... locally, which the dealers will play up to (whilst sucking air through their teeth), but then will probably ship your old car to another part of the country for a bigger profit.

How's it going, AKA, Nutwatch? - 12 month spends to date = 3.34% of current retirement "pot" (as at end August 2023)

Thankfully in my case, my car is only worth £600 so £2k is good news. My brother in law has a £20k diesel car which will not be ULEZ compliant next year so that really is unfair.
Now to get a loan for a second hand car!

I would imagine the number of extra people that can take advantage of the #2k scrappage for all will be very limited.  Most of those that were not eligible for the scrappage under the previous criteria will have taken whatever action they intended to take already to make themselves ULEZ-compliant.  On that basis, this does seem to be a purely political move.

But there's nothing to stop the punter shipping the car to another part of the country himself. Except for the cost and hassle, which the dealer obviously has to factor into his offer.

I haven't. My "non compliant car" is still sitting on my drive. It's worth less than £2k so do I receive £2k or the value of the car?

AFAIK you can scrap it and get £2k from Sadiq or sell it.  It's up to you.  You don't have to buy another car with the money.  The car has to registered to someone at your address since 30/01/22 and be taxed, insured and MOTd.

Obviously, you are going to take the £2k if you can get it.

My point was that the number of people with non-compliant cars worth less than £2k that are now eligible for scrappage and were not until last week will be a very small number given how close we are to the ULEZ being imposed.  Most of those with non-compliant cars worth less than £2k and not previously eligible for scrappage will have done something about that already (or decided to keep the car and just pay).

I applied on Monday as part of the extended scheme. What happens next? I can’t wait 10 working days. Do I wait until I hear back from them? Will I need to take it somewhere to be scrapped? Can I buy another car in the meantime?
