Young driver going to university and NCB

My 19 year old son is off to uni in Sept and will have 1 year no claims.  He won't be taking his car and I don't know whether to SORN it while he is away (4 years) or is it worth insuring him on it and building up his no claims.  What is the cheapest way to keep him insured on it even though he will only use in university holidays?  Feels crazy to have him insured fully comp on a car that he will only use a couple of months a year but maybe its the best option?

Are you sure he wont use it for 4 years? I didn't take my car to uni in 1st year as I was living on campus in halls but 2nd year on I took it because I was off campus.

When are you anticipating him back and using it? Just the 2 months of summer or the Xmas and Spring breaks too?

Ultimately get quotes for temp insurance for the periods and compare that to the quote of an annual policy. Given the durations its possible that an annual policy will be cheaper

Thansk for your response DullGreyGuy.  He will be back for Xmas and Spring breaks and unlikely he will take it to Uni over the 4 years as I understand parking is hard to come by at Worcester.  Its really a case of weighing up accrued no claims bonus vs saving on not having insurance.  Just wondered if anyone has found the best option.

But is the no insurance an option? Wont they be using it for the three breaks? In which case price that up... the problem with insurance is its highly personal and what it costs me to do temp cover on my car for 2 months is not going to be the same as what it costs you to do the same.

If its not going to be used at all then there would be a question of if its worth keeping for 4 years to just sit there and depreciate.
