So got out of debt thats to this site - massive thanks. Got 30k savings due to a recent inheritance so no longer getting housing benefit. Trying to use 30k to fix up old house to live in. Anyway have my mum 86 living with us, I just got a low paid job - minimum wage so coming off working tax credit. Husbands self employed biz is going terrible but he is looking after my mum when i am not there. Before we were told not to claim carers allowance because it would take us off working tax credit. But now we are off it anyway, should we get husband on claim for it?

Is your mum in receipt of Attendance Allowance?
Does your partner earn less than £139 a week?

From your link - "You usually cannot have anyone aged 18 or over living with you...."

Thank you yes my husband has been earning less than 139 and also mum lives with us so she doesn't get sdp.
My wages should be around 20500 pa.0 -
My friend claimed carers allowance last year, they made him jump through every hoop they could. He was self employed. They wanted a tax return, he gave last years as always a year behind, Denied as earned to much.Called and started again , wanted weekly earnings, 30 sheets of paper, one per week.It took so long it was the new tax year, sent his SA return to them, still not right. Then they called him after 11 months and said you can have carers from today, but no back payment. They owed him 3k by now.He said no, I will wait for the appeal.3 weeks later he got 3k, This year his SA was sent in, he did it on the 08/04/23 and sent it in a few days later. Not a peep from them.Just be ready to fight this for up to a year.Sorry.0
