Hi

Yesterday a car rolled down the hill opposite my house, and crashed into a lamp post outside my house, and damaged my garden wall.

I have all the drivers details, lots of photos, & the police where called and have given a case number.

How do I go about getting this damage repaired?

Do I....

1.  Contact the drivers insurance to make a claim?
2.  Contact my house insurance and let them argue the claim with the drivers insurance?

Anyone had this happen to them?
Advice?

The driver owner should get in touch with their insurance who will then be in touch with you with further instructions.

make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.

    You can do either

Option 1 avoids you having to pay your excess, they are normally happier for you to use your own guys but you have no rights to go to the Ombudsman if things go wrong and they may be more picky about how much of the wall is rebuilt etc as they only indemnify you

Option 2 often will have their own guys so no need for you to find trades and is on a new for old basis so will be less worried if someone says the whole thing needs rebuilding, if things go wrong you have the Ombudsman to resolve them. Downside you have to pay your excess, may be less open to you using your own guys and may be drawn into the fight between your insurer and theirs

Option 2 is likely to impact your premium, under option 1 you should inform your insurers and so it'd have a similar premium impact however most those that pursue option 1 "forget" to tell their home insurers.

If you have legal assistance on your home insurance policy you could speak to them for advice.

Unfortunately I am too 'tight'  to take out legal protection... lol

I will give the guy a ring tonight and see what his insurance have said to him....

    Wife phoned guy last night.
He has informed his insurance online and is waiting to hear back.

Hopefully his insurance will contact us and either arrange to see the damage or ask for 3 quotes for the repair.

My wife has already got one quote at £3000.... phew!.....
