Opened a Nationwide FlexDirect account - tried to pay money into it from my Sainsbury savings account. Apparently, according to Sainsbury's, I 'don't own that account'. Erm - yes I do. Ended up having to transfer from Sainsbugs to my TSB account and then from TSB to Nationwide - TSB happy to accept that I have every right to pay money into my own account!! Now need to set up £1000 per month to go in and out to meet their Ts&Cs, heaven help us all.
I have a Wise sterling account, and needed to open a Wise Euro account. On my third attempt now, and still no further forward. Have scanned passport into the system via my laptop, taken a photo of it via my phone, taken a selfie, and transferred £20 as requested, all in order as I got a big green tick on my phone screen. Verification is 'in progress' and might take 5 days. I already have an account with them, dammit, use it regularly to transfer to Ireland and Australia.

it is not entirely clear what you are saying happened

Are you saying when you set up your new payee on the Sainsbury's account that confirmation of payee came back as failed?

I'm saying exactly what I said in my original post - a message came up saying that I 'don't own that account'. The first time it happened, I thought it might be just because the Nationwide account was brand new - so I left it a week and tried again, and got the same message. Very frustrating.

Recently banks seem to be focussing on inconveniencing their entire customer base in the hope of catching a handful of bad 'uns. It's a strategy that will cost them in the longer term.

Vote with your feet and open an account with a slightly less-bad bank.

One that pays a switching bonus and offers a high interest regular saver would be a good option.

I think this is a pun and you are saying first direct, but yes - First Direct offers £175 switcher bonus subject to eligibility. They offer a 7% regular saver. NOTE that FD is apparently starting a savings rate shake up on 29th June, and their RS may increase. The increase will not necessarily be applied to existing accounts - though it may if they follow their path from last time.
