Getting cheque made payable to me not to 'Executors of'..

My dad overpaid his EON account by 5,000 in January due to misunderstanding bills, he thought the credit was what he owed.

He has since died (he was 93) and was worried about the amount he was paying for his electric bills.

His account is over 5000 in credit and Eon have sent a cheque to me as Executor however I cannot cash this cheque as the bank will not accept and I cannot open an account as Executor as banks do not offer this account anymore.

I have called Eon customer care numerous times and they continually say that they cannot change the name as the policy does not allow this. Therefore I am stuck with a cheque I cannot cash for a significant amount.

Eon have told me I need to formally complain and then it will be escalated to the Ombudsman, which seems a long drawn out process just to get a cheque issued.

Anyone had any luck with similar?

Geez - these big organisations are meant to have bereavement departments that understand these issues as they deal with them all the time. You cannot be the first person to put this request to Eon!

Can you find out if they have a specialist bereavement team and ask them to transfer your enquiry to that team? Quite frankly, asking you to raise a complaint is a crass suggestion, and Eon really should know better!

    Absolutely appalling customer service!

Hi I am also dealing with the bereavement team and they refer me to customer service! I really am going round in circles and they all say I must formally complain.

If the cheque is just in your name, why won't your bank accept it?

How many banks have you tried to open an Executor account?  I'm pretty sure Barclays still do them.

But the OP said the cheque wasn't just in their name.  And even that doesn't always work with banks as I've had a cheque rejected as the bank thought I had changed my name when I hadn't.

I do think that the OP should complain if only to make the point to Eon that they are being massively insensitive at a difficult time for someone.  I don't think that they are wrong in taking precautions - anyone could tell them to send a cheque for another person's credit - and it's logical that money owed should go to the executor(s) of an estate.  But having proved that southastra should receive the money then Eon should send it to them in a suitable format that the bank will accept.  Maybe if father's bank account is still open it could be refunded to that?  Then OP could withdraw it as they would any other funds.

To be clear, the suggestion is you open an executor's account, not an account in your own name.

Have you tried speaking to the bereavement department of your fathers bank?

Several banks do offer executor accounts HSBC is one of them.

I closed my dad's bank account but I suppose I could contact them for advice. I really don't want to open an executor's account and thought this wasn't required.
