I have just bought a new iron and it has a little water in it. Is this usual, perhaps from testing before sale or have I got a returned item?

I've never seen water in a new iron, so strongly suspect it's a return.  Did you buy it from a retailer who's name starts with A, by any chance?

Argos, because they are more likely to accept returns!

Just googled it, and some irons are randomly selected for factory testing, hence the water in the tank.  You learn something new every day!

As long as the box was properly sealed,  the cord was neatly tied, and the plug had the paper cover over the prongs, then I think it's safe to say that your iron is new.

Would that water be sterile after going through the testing process then stored for what could be a period of months?

Does it really matter ? Are you trying to find a problem that doesn't exist ?

It would to me and you know the old adage about the customer.

Lots of these goods now are made in emerging economies who are not renowned for having good quality water supply, so I would not want it in my kitchen several months later.

A steam iron is going to boil the water anyway.  So even if it isn't sterile now, it will be once it's up to temperature.
    If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.
