HMRC helpline is closed for summer!!!!

Just when you thought things couldn't get any more inconvenient with government operations, HMRC has closed it's helpline until late September.  Unbelievable.

I looked online and tried the digital assistant but I can't get the answer I want.  I over paid into a cash ISA last tax year.  Not by much, but the advise is to contact HMRC and they will explain what to do or sort it out.  Except you can't get hold of them.

Even the Webchat seems offline.  Any suggestions of what to do?  I wanted to submit my self assessment return nice and early this year, but don't really want to until I sorted this.

It's the Self Assessment helpline that is closed and I don't think that would be of any use to you for this query.

The normal helpline is still open but this might be a useful read

If it's a first 'offence' then they probably won't take any action anyway, but even if they did determine that something needed to be done then (a) this wouldn't be for ages yet, (b) won't involve you doing something yourself and (c) is unlikely to impact on your 2022/23 self assessment, so best just to go ahead with that....

In my experience, they take no notice of letters. I'm not sure they even open them.

There's no need to do this, as OP's ISA manager will submit the relevant data in the annual reporting anyway, so HMRC will be made aware of the situation as a matter of course and will choose what, if anything, to do about it at that stage.
