we drive past these houses regularly on way to North Wales. Never been able to discover what the columns are on side of house. Intrigued ! Can anyone put me out of my misery.

  • The properties have been built for some time looking at the moss on the roof. Probably just part of the unique design of the properties like the corner windows. It looks like the columns have cladding......I hope it's fireproof !

I think its just part of the design. Sort of meant to suggest chimneys maybe?

I see them as well on my drive.  I have no idea so it would be good to find out what they are as well.  I had come to the conclusion they were a design feature, but why would a builder waste money and resources on something that substantial that does nothing?

Either decorative, or possibly part of a passive ventilation system?

Might be worth finding the planning application documents on the council's website and see what they say.  The plans and elevations might have notes indicating what they are for, and if not you can probably assume they are just decorative.

I thought they looked like a solar panel - but nicer than on the roof.

Agreed, if they’re solar panels that’s a much better and far more elegant solution than simply bolting them to the roof

Solar with an air gap are more efficient as they are cooler and keeps the loft far cooler also, important if the inverter has to be installed there.

Some are facing the wrong way to be solar

  • They are unlikely to be solar panels.
    1. The area is far to small to produce any meaningful output.
    2. They are all pointing in different directions.....which wouldn't be optimal.

not dissimilar in size to our very effective solar water heating panel .. but they definitely should face south
