Santander Payments

Just out of interest (excuse the pun) wondered if other people are being asked for OTP on every payment/transfer from Santander?
I’ve suddenly started being asked for these for all movements (mainly moving my own money around) on payments I’ve made many times before and for low values (as low as £20).  Even making a payment to the same place two day’s running I’m still asked.

I don't get it for every payment but for most of the dozens of payments I make each month. It seems you get a number of "free" payments each month, and then every subsequent one needs the OTP. It then resets at the start of a new month, or whatever the reset period is.

I make all my payments in the app, which makes dealing with the OTP very easy as a single tap fills the OTP. Not sure what the point of the OTP is as I think I have already authorised the payment with FaceID by the time I get the OTP....Hey hoh.

I would hate to do it online as it requires lots of typing.

    Hi Red Imp ...
It varies! ... they clearly have an algorithm based on size of transfer, frequency and 'newness' (is that a word?), but I've found for smallish payments (under £100) or ones I've made before (under £1000) the 2 factor verification disappears (Santander eSaver is my hub).

I would expect more checks in general to come in in the short term as the government have been making pronouncements about scams and money laundering, with more onus being put on the banks.

We MSE'ers who do move things around a lot are likely to find things more onerous.

Literally started yesterday, payments I’ve made many times before started asking.  Mostly on app so it pretty much auto fills

Have you recently changed your phone, or your phone network/broadband provider, or anything that might make your connection look unusual?

In my case, it's the same phone number and address I had since I first opened my Santander account in 2011.

They have merely changed their checks on outgoing payments again. Which is all fair enough - the efficacy of a security system depends to some extent on the randomness of checks, so that fraudsters have less chance to detect any pattern.

Santander appear to also have introduced checks on incoming payments recently. Prior to them doing this, I had only come across this with Kroo but I understand this may now become more widespread.

All these extra checks can be quite annoying but I suspect we will have to grin and bear.

I asked about any changes to your circumstances because another poster said they hadn't noticed an increase. I haven't either but I don't make many transactions through Santander (and I always use the mobile app when I do, not internet banking).

Nothing at all.  I was curious whether was just me or across all Santander
