Barclays has announced a fresh wave of bank closures, with 15 further branches to shut this summer. This is in addition to the 69 already confirmed to close in 2023. The latest round of closures means the high street bank will shut at least 84 branches by the end of the year. Below we've listed the branches disappearing and what the alternatives are if you still want face-to-face banking...

    Pop-up banking sites?! Vans?! Really?
Their brick&mortar branches are understaffed, people wait weeks and months for an appointment even for such basic things like ID checks.

.withdrawal, NOT withdrawel ..bear with me, NOT bare with me

It's a bit like, we missed these off the original list. The other list was only released recently

Have a meeting tomorrow with the manager of the local NatWest about their upcoming branch closure and what the alternatives will be for customers.  When it goes there will be no banks at all in the area, just one already over stretched post office with all its limitations.  I expect there will be a lot of pressure on local businesses for cash back.  They might welcome that if they are unable to do any cash banking easily.  It does all drive us to cash-less whether we want that or not.  (note to self ensure I find some coins to pay for parking tomorrow as the machines don't take cards)

The local branch in my village closed three or four years ago, then the one in the next local town, and now the next nearest two are on the closure list. It'll now be a 20 mile trek to get to a branch if I needed one. The last time I was in one a few months ago to make a deposit, it was staffed by two people, one wandering around with an ipad, one behind a counter. If buildings/staff and rents/rates are so expensive - open more banking hubs with multi-brands sharing a building. Five hubs could be run with 1 staff member attending each 1 day a week. They've tried a few, but the appetite for them seems muted, but it's a way of cutting costs while still keeping a basic local service (Over and above what you can get at the post office).

Those 'Banking Hubs' are just glorified Post Offices. All they can do is withdrawals, deposits, balance enquiries etc. They can't resolve account issues unless you happen to turn up on a day when a representative from your bank is in.

Yes - I'm aware of that - but if I was in a particular village, and knew that Barclays was there every Tuesday - I could plan my visit accordingly rather than having to traipse off to the nearest city. I would rather a one day a week service than a no day a week service. I think they should make more of them rather than the piecemeal efforts they've put in so far compared to the rush to close branches.

I'm still wondering why people seem to require frequent access to a branch.

Absolutely spot on here, Chris. My small Yorkshire home town has lost TSB, Lloyds, HSBC and Virgin Money branches in recent years. My Dad banks with Barclays, which is safe for now, but even he was saying he'd be happy with one day a week Hub service for any bank-specific queries plus basic access on the other days if the worst came to the worst.

I guess one thing to bear in mind is getting the staff there from their home branches on that one day a week, given that public transport in rural areas seems to be going down the pan even faster than bank branch numbers. But I'm in total agreement with you that it would be a worthwhile service.
