Hi
Can anyone offer any advise please, my dad was a partner with mom in a business, he closed it down in 21 and passed away in 22. They had an accountant who visited my mom in January 23 she paid his fees and he advised there was nothing else for her to do, however now she has received a £100 pound fine off the tax office this week, then a self assessment bill for my day of £197 then another £100 fine today. I dont know anything about self employment could anyone advise me please. Thank you

Have you checked with the accountant that he submitted the necessary returns and advised the business had cease?
He should able to advise your mother what the fines are for but it sounds like tax returns not submitted. If he has omitted to do something then he should be sorting it out.0 -
It may be that HMRC have failed to act on being told the business ceased.0

The accountant visited in January 2023 and said there was nothing further to do, according to OP. Why would that be the case if the business was still going in 2021/22? Is the accountant the agent, and aware of the fines? The £197?0

Is that not a possibility?Maybe op can confirm exactly when business ceased.0 -

That is why I suggested contact the agent.
If he did submit on time then he will have confirmation of submission.0
