Can an incorrect National Insurance No. Cause a pension to be lost?

Following on from your pensions programme, I have been attempting to locate my pensions. I have changed jobs a number of times over the years and each time a new pension was set up.  Unfortunately, there is one company I worked for and I am not getting very far. I am now beginning to doubt if I did have a pension with them.
I worked there from 1998 to 2003.  In 1999-2000, my PAYE Coding Notice was issued with the incorrect National Insurance Number. The last letter had changed from a "C" to an "A". Could this have impacted on my pension (assuming I had one)?

I have tried contacting the Inland Revenue and cannot get through after hours of waiting on the phone. I have contacted the company and they say they have no record of any pension for me.

Please can you help me to find out if I did have a pension with the company?

Many thanks
