Switch to smart meter? Or switch supplier and then switch to smart meter?

I’m on Economy 7 with EDF and everything is working as it should. I’m confident having read these forums that my existing Ampy 5246C meter is not dependent on the soon to expire Radio Teleswitch Service.

So why change? And why worry about it?

In the future I want to move away from our present night storage heaters and be able to access more sophisticated tariffs (also thinking also about battery storage and an electric vehicle). But I hear stories from neighbours (we’re in the Lake District) and more generally about botched smart meter installations.

So what is the best route to a reliable smart meter (other than putting it off)? Organise the upgrade through EDF? Or are some suppliers known to be better than others at the process? So switch from EDF as a first step?

Sorry this is a big vague but any wisdom or experiences much appreciated.

im sure from a technical view theres better and worse smart meters but i dont think any one can say any supplier with fit a particular one so 'reliable' probably isnt something you need to worry about. they all fit what they have in stock and there all much of a muchness from an end user view.

and the local engineers will probably install for several suppliers in the area (from what i can tell there mostly contractors)

do you no who you want to move to and are you ready to move? or do you have a reason to stay where you are

if you do then i think i'd contact edf and see what timescale they have for an instalation. if its more than about 2/4 weeks then maybe move now and then arrange with your new supplier?

that's because the last goverment payment is due 1 march so if you move after that then its one last thing to keep track of.

It's amazing how those with a can-do attitude and willingness to 'pitch in and work' get all the luck, isn't it?
