I'm confused as this has never happened before. I submitted my self-assessment yesterday and it's showing me my calculation. But it's not taken into account my 2 payments on account that I made last January and July. It just shows me what I owe in total for 21/22 and first payment on account for 22/23.

Below the calculation it says:
HM Revenue and Customs will add this amount to your Self Assessment statement of account. It doesn't include any 2021 to 2022 payments on account you may have made or any other amounts outstanding. To help you to decide how much, if anything, to pay by the due date, check your Self Assessment account and use the information above until it transfers over.

So do I work out how much I owe by calculating:

Amount I owe for 21/22
minus the Jan 22 and July 22 payments on account
plus first payment on account for 22/23

Is this correct?

I tried to contact HMRC but just get cut off after a few minutes....

Thanks so much for any help or advice.

    Yup, exactly that.

It's probable it won't be able to do that calculation for you before midnight so you have to do it yourself as you submitted close to the deadline.

thank you. It's just confusing. And strange that their system can't calculate it so that people know for sure what they need to pay. On the submission page it shows my submission reference but also shows the following:

    Submitted on:
    30 Jan 2023
    Received on:
    Not Yet Received

So I guess their system is slow? In 10 years this has never happened which is why I'm confused!

I would be surprised if it has never happened before as the system has been in place since 1996/97. What you are looking at is a calculation of your liability for 2021/22 - just a calculation! How you pay or have paid is entirely separate. Look upon it as a final invoice.

What you have stated is correct - you owe any BALANCE for 2021/22 that you have not already paid by ways of payment on account in January and July 2022.

Since so many people submit their return in the last days the system cannot process  with them all immediately so there will be a backlog to be done.
