Owe 11,000 tax?!

in Cutting tax
Not sure if this is in the correct place, apologies if not.
During covid lockdowns, my husband was furloughed and I was at the end of my degree. Lockdown meant students couldn’t work within hospitals. To bridge the gap I had a little side hustle at home (a little like the body shop at home) so it would make life easier to pay bills etc.
I completed my tax return for this last year, and owed nothing as I didn’t make enough from it to. In the meantime I’d just started working as a qualified member of staff. I haven’t done this ‘self employed’ role since working as an employee. I filled in the tax return this year to reflect this (I earned £0 from it).
I got notified that I was owed around £1200 tax back, which I asked to be paid into my back account. 1 week on and I got emails saying I needed to log in to my self assessment account again to pay what I owed (???). Well, I’ve just logged in and apparently owe £11,000!!
how is this even possible when I earned nothing from any self employment and I was I originally told they owed me £1200 a mere week ago!
anyone have any experience with this? Unsurprisingly I can’t get in touch with HMRC but I really don’t believe this is right.

I would log in to your self assessment and check your tax return figures just to make sure you haven’t put in any figures by mistake. Also, look at your tax calculation. That will give you all the figures and you can see how they have worked out how much tax you owe or any refund due.

Do as above and then if still not clear give the SA helpline a call - they answer the phone quickly, open til 8 and very helpful.

Did you include your PAYE income tax deducted in your SA return?0
