Water rates from 2004

Not sure if this is the right place to post this but apologies if it isn't.
I received a letter recently from a debt collection agency for water rates. I decided to ring the water company direct rather than the collection agency to enquire as to when it may relate to.
It turns out its for Jan 2004 - Apr 2004 for a property we lived in.
We moved out of this property in January 2004 and paid a final bill.
I then sneakily phoned back and enquired about my address from January 2004 which they confirmed I started paying then.
I therefore challenged the debt for the old house for the period when I didn't live there. Now obviously they have proof as they have the details of my new address where I paid new rates.
However they have sent me a letter asking to prove I didn't live at the old address after January 2004. I do not have anyway of doing this that I can think of.
My question is - Is it mine or their onus to prove who lived where and when and therefore who is liable?
Should I be ringing the CAB?

Not sure about this - where did you live at the time they are querying about? Is there anything that you can get with your add at the time to show them - might be worth contacting the CAB about it if you can't. How about requesting statements from your bank i fyou moved? They would have the add at the time?

If you sold it wouldn't you have paperwork regarding the completion of the sale?

no was renting the house but unofficially from a friend as I was under 18 so no rental contract either.
The friend has sold the house on but it's strange how they have only followed it up now.Running challenge 2014 = 689k / 800k0 -
Is it worth looking a copy of your credit file (apply for a free one if necessary and then cancel membership).
This should detail your addresses in the last 6 years, and provide you with proof that you moved on a certain date (this is obviously if you applied for credit at all since moving into your current address as they ask you the date you moved into your current address, etc on applications).
Thanks to MSE, I am mortgage free!
