The engineer doesnt know neither does his manager or other engineers. but they have had one or two others and no longer fit these meters ( mine has been in only 6 months) Their words "it's knackered" , and has nothing to do with the battery.
They could of just fitted a new meter right away SAC2334 said:
Gas meters with dead batteries in most cases fail closed .That prompts the occupants to get on the phone to the supplier immediately not several years later . They also display a low battery sign on the meter or battery fail warning It gets complaints but that is how prepay meters work too , no money in the meter no service .MWT said:seaburn68 said:I would prefer a working gas meter ! and i'm paying what I have been asked to pay and what are you on about "cut off "! for what reason I pay all my bills !
ps I have money to pay the gas I have used .The context of the "cut off" comment is that billing on estimated use is the quid pro quo for not cutting off the supply for a failed meter. They will in most circumstances fail open so there is no interruption to your use of the gas, but the supplier does get the right to bill on an estimate, and so far it would seem they have been exceptionally reasonable in what they are billing until they can replace the meter. After it is fixed, as others have said, there will be an opportunity to negotiate on the full amount to be charged and you will have the option to go to the Ombudsman if you can't reach agreement.Happy to hear you have the ability to pay when the real bill does eventually arrive, sadly too many assume they will never get charged, but good that it is not the case for you.
In this case the smart gas meter apparently had nothing to do with a dead battery .It would be interesting to find out what exactly the problem was not just "its broken "

That’s how I read your post - if they come up with an estimate that is reasonable, you would pay - just concerned that they would go over the top.seaburn68 said:to be clear I always expect to pay for fule i have actually used ....I dont not think its fair to pay more than i have actually used. When I have wasted time conatcting and chasing over and over again , I expect to come to an arrangment thats fair and id expect a gesture of good will so i feel I am not being robbed through no fault of myself .
“Siri - show me an apology that isn’t an apology” ⬆️ exactly my thoughts .
spot on.
I'am not sure why the odd one thinks otherwise !! They must have nothing else better than to think the worst of people

I’m in a similar position, my meter reading has froze and in the last bill I show 2 months of no gas usage, I’ve not let them know yet, I’ve made a real effort to cut power usage which include fitting a log burner and spent summer collecting wood, so to estimate on previous readings would be wrong, I rarely use the gas heating, Yet! If I’m going to be hammered on an estimate from last year, do I say sod it and put the heating on and get a couple of months saving my logs or fess up and have to pay for previous gas I haven’t used?1

Yes I have all my facts ready , as you say last year means nothing our heating habits have changes drastically . A “fair” outcome should be able to be found .cuthy1 said:I’m in a similar position, my meter reading has froze and in the last bill I show 2 months of no gas usage, I’ve not let them know yet, I’ve made a real effort to cut power usage which include fitting a log burner and spent summer collecting wood, so to estimate on previous readings would be wrong, I rarely use the gas heating, Yet! Hi
The way forward is an estimated charge and you can dispute that with evidence but they will have previous readings.
When our water meter was losing water/leak and we noted the bills kept on going up, the adjusted the bill to average usage and we thought that was fair.
Good luck0 -
Legally you should report the meter as soon as you are aware of it. Every one has this in their terms and conditions of supply.cuthy1 said:I’m in a similar position, my meter reading has froze and in the last bill I show 2 months of no gas usage, I’ve not let them know yet, I’ve made a real effort to cut power usage which include fitting a log burner and spent summer collecting wood, so to estimate on previous readings would be wrong, I rarely use the gas heating, Yet!
