How many times does a company have to try to repair something less than 6 months since it was purchased before I can insist on my money back or a replacement?

What is the item and did you buy it online or phone. Thanks

Before you spend, remember the MSE Money Mantras. Ask yourself, do I need it? Can I afford it? If the answer is NO to any of those questions, DON’T buy it. (Quote from MSE 15/11/22)

One attempt only, after which you can exercise your final right of rejection.

A chair and from an office supply shop
I think you've misunderstood the question, which was badly phrased. I think diystarter7 meant to ask "... did you buy it instore or was it a distance sale (eg online or by 'phone)?"
But in your case I think it's irrelevant anyway*. If the chair is faulty then - whether a distance or instore purchase - the trader has one attempt to repair and if they fail to do so you can insist on a refund. If you are within 6 months of purchase it's a full refund. After 6 months they can reduce the refund to reflect the use you've had of the chair.
Or I believe you could negotiate a discount on the price of the chair if you wanted to keep it...
*It might be relevant if it was a distance sale and you were within the "cancellation window", but I assume you are wanting to reject it because it's faulty, not because you've simply changed your mind?
