Probate Application and IHT forms required for low value estate (£150K)

Just starting this process as Executor and had a go at the PA1P probate application form. 21 pages later I have the basis of the application but the IHT forms section is unclear.

How does an applicant know the range of form numbers, where you can get them from and which ones are applicable for this type of case. Seems like you are thrown in the deep end with the temptation of high professional fees for what is form filling with technical terminology.

Is there a simple checklist or flowchart for the process?

Thanks for any advice/guidance

It is a while since I had to do it, but I found that if you started at the beginning, you'd be directed to each form you needed one by one. I found in fact that most of the forms after the first one needed nothing more than name, date of birth etc and then I'd give an answer to a question which indicated that nothing more was needed.

Is there any reason why you are not submitting your application online ?

I find the process fairly straightforward, and from what others have said on this board, if for any reason an online application is not suitable apparently you are directed to the forms you require.

Why do you need IHT forms for such a low value estate?

Much easier to do it online and follow the guidance. All you have to do then is to use the online IHT calculator, and fill in the figures it gives you in the appropriate place on the probate application. There won't be any IHT to pay unless there is something you have not told us, like a high value property.

Thanks for the comments. I will try the online process.

Why forms for low value estate? I think you have to even though you will be below the threshold! (Rishi needs to change this one quick)

No you don't ( in most cases) .... a low value estate should be simple to deal with by a on-line application

For deaths that occurred before 1st Jan this year you would have needed to complete the simplified IHT return using IHT 205 for an estate of this size. This is now obsolete and you should not need to do any IHT return just apply for probate on line.

I did an online probate application for my Mum’s estate very recently which was significantly under the IHT threshold. Really simple to do with no HMRC forms and probate was granted in 7 weeks.
