Grandson moving in, what benefits would change

Mum currently gets state pension, guaranteed pension credit (and all the things that come with it) and transitional carers allowance. Grandson is struggling in a flat so wanting to move in with her. He is 25, works but currently off sick, gets SSP and a small amount of universal credit.
if this were to happen would she lose her pension credit and the associated benefits that brings.
TIA

Not sure what you mean by transitional carers allowance. As long as your mum doesn't receive a severe disability premium on her pension credit because she is disabled herself, then there would be no change to Pension credit. It may affect her council tax discount.

Is she a homeowner or is she renting/claiming housing benefit?
All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.

Not sure what you mean by ‘transitional’ CA. Do you mean she has an underlying entitlement to CA and is getting a carer premium in her Pension Credit?

Unless she gets a Severe Disability Premium in her Pension Credit (which she can not be if she is not getting a disability benefit) her PC is not affected by him moving in. I assume, because you didn’t mention it, that she doesn’t get a disability benefit.

If she currently lives alone she will be getting a single person discount on her Council Tax. She will lose this if he moves in. However, because she gets Pension Credit, she is entitled to maximum Council Tax Reduction that will increase if the Council Tax increases. However it may be assumed that he contributes something to towards paying the Council Tax.

Similarly, if she claims Housing Benefit, he may be expected to contribute towards the rent.

Hi, your Mum would probably still be able to claim certain benefits but would have to, of course, declare a 'change of circumstances', as per the comprehensive information in the following link -

    https://www.gov.uk/report-benefits-change-circumstances

Her grandson's details will also have to be submitted, so that they both continue to receive the benefits to which they are entitled.

  • Thanks all, she gets underlying entitlement to CA as a carer premium to her pension credit, my mistake, sorry.
    she gets no disabled benefits.
grandson is only on UC at the moment as he is off sick and the SSP is not enough to live on. He is due back to work soon, just waiting sign off from his occupational health, so his claims will end then.

Does your mum pay rent? If so any Housing Benefit paid will be reduced (see the link above). Same with Council Tax Reduction / Support.

Is that rule still in place? I couldn't remember if it was still there (no non-dependent deductions for 6 months after the non-dep moves in)

For legacy benefits it is (but I had forgotten it).

  • No she does not pay rent.  It is her own property and no mortgage.
