Costs of settling an estate

Family member left solicitors as executor and trustees of their estate, What sort of costs should the estate have been looking at for a simple estate, (1 house that was transferred to the beneficiary’s, partial share in another house transferred to the beneficiary and cash of less than £40k).  Also how long should this process have taken, probate was granted 6 months after death, but the settlement took nearly 3 years in total.

With the property being transferred it should not have taken more than a year, what caused the long delay.

As for how much it cost, how long is a piece of string?

£20k is not unusual for an estate involving a couple of properties, unless we are talking about a couple of cheap properties in a run down part of the UK. I think that is about the costs that a Scottish solicitor charged on my wife’s uncle’s estate. That also took 3 years to complete although they did transfer his house quite quickly to the person who inherited that and as the residual beneficiary my wife got paid in batches of interim payments over that time.
