Received a Universal Credit payment of £300 Sept 20th

Do I qualify for the £323 second cost of living grant?

I will stop my UC claim as I start work November 1st.

You will be eligible for the second Cost of Living Payment of £324 if you were entitled to a payment (or later found to be entitled to a payment) of Universal Credit for an assessment period that ended in the period 26 August 2022 to 25 September 2022.
Note that you don’t need to stop you claim when you start work, you should simply report a change to your employment status. Working will not affect your claim until you are paid. At that point a deduction will be made to your UC payment which may reduce it to nil.

UC doesn't just stop when you start work, people claim UC and work depending on their circumstances. When you start work you will need to report a change of circumstances and tell them you've started working. UC is based on earnings received during your assessment period. Once you start receiving your earnings if your UC reduces to zero then your claim will just close (usually about 6 months)

  • But if I do stop the UC claim - will I still receive the second payment?

If you got a UC payment in the qualifying period you qualify for the second CoL, it doesn’t matter what happens to your UC after the qualifying period. That’s what qualifying period means.

If you're entitled then why stop the claim?
  • I don't want to have to attend the job centre once a week, especially when I am working full time. I'd have to take time off every week!

If you are working full time you will not be required to attend JobCentre.
