Also, I firmly believe world war 3 is on the cards, within 2 years...Russia and China against the West. Truss has already said she would like war with China if they side with Russia.
We are already at war with Russia, by supplying arms to Ukraine.
I want to be able to preserve my ability to have a roof over my head, food to eat and not be without of money, eg I spend £70-80pw on supplements for my illnesses, these are essential and I want to be able to eat all organic, clean meats eg grass fed beef, non hormone fed chicken, all very expensive, to preserve my health from further detioration. Not doing this atm, am cutting down on organic fruit and veg to use for money to invest
I wish I could cause this £300-400 to month to accrue/muliply.
I can sell gold/silver to a coinshop for cash for food if banks are cyber attacked or other eventualities. There are 2 local fruit and veg shops, Butchers to offer silver coins/bars for food, I live in a rural area, farms everywhere to offer silver for fresh food.
Thank you for taking a kind interest. I really appreciate it.

While I agree we are effectively at war with Russia (and you'll notice that despite actively supporting their opponent with vast swathes of cash and weapons, Russia has not shown the slightest inclination to start an actual war with the West - greatly diminishing your theory that WW3 is on the cards at all, let alone within "2 years"), I find it incredibly hard to believe even an idiot the size of Liz Truss would say that she'd "like war with China" (and that doesn't even make sense - they effectively have already sided with Russia - we haven't declared war on Russia, why would we on China?). So leaving that aside...

To be brutally honest, I don't think £300 a month for 6 months is going to be much use in investments to sustain you for retirement. Though I'm still confused why you want to buy shares when you've convinced yourself that they're going to collapse in two years? You do realise that the stock market is made up of shares? If you're expecting to need to barter silver and gold coins to get food in the near future then I don't see how the companies you've listed could possibly survive - losing you all your savings. As I've already said, any investment/savings you hold are going to be worthless if such a scenario takes place anyway.

You seem to have worked yourself up into thinking the apocalypse is coming unnecessarily. I'd recommend that you rethink your plans once you've calmed down a bit.

I'm also not a financial expert so hopefully someone here is able to come up with a plan for your savings for you. For a small amount so close to retirement, I can't really think what would be worthwhile other than a savings account (but definitely not a hoarde of silver coins!).
  • Given your fears, perhaps you should check out some prepper/survivalism forums.

If you work on the assumption that we are heading to another global war or that the situation will escalate further from here, then gold is not a bad bet for storing value.
The way I see the gold price is this: it is driven by various factors. At the moment we have the big puzzle of nominal interest rates, the level of inflation and the US Dollar to play with. They explain a large part of the gold price: The lower the USD Index, the higher gold, the higher the real interest rates, the cheaper gold. Reverse cases hold true as well. And then there's the risk premium. We saw gold rallying quite a bit in the wake of Russia invading Ukraine. Should we indeed have war on NATO territory, that risk premium will outweigh any inflation or interest rate concerns, so not a bad bet. In fact I do hold physical as well just for that reason.

When buying physical it's all about counterparty risk. Delboy coming to mind, buying his gold chain for 4 carats, and selling them for 8 carats. You get the idea. Personally, I only buy from LBMA members:

    https://www.lbma.org.uk/membership/current-membership#-

Take Sharps & Pixley for example, they offer coins as well. This is not a recommendation. When you compare prices, do keep in mind the lower the notional value, the higher the total transaction costs as proportion thereof. Cheapest way to get exposure to gold is to buy an ETF. LBMA member also buy back from you should you wish to sell.

As for cyber attack, consider holding cash. We had a similar instance a few years back when I think VISA went belly up for a day. Same thing. Either have Visa, Mastercard and Amex cards and a bit of cash around to buy the essentials if we should get hit.

To pay the village butcher in gold coins I would not do that. Pay them cash, gold bars/coins are handy to carry or transfer assets. But hopefully we'll never come to that point.

I know about prepping...am well prepped actually
yes, if I expect a stock market crash, why invest in stock?!! It'll go down...by the time it goes up...well, who knows how long it will be? The Great Depression lasted 12 years...my age is not apt...
I guess it'll be continuing the silver....... and gold, only if some windflall comes my way.
The other option is an online business which takes years to establish...I do like the idea of teaching meditation as an online course...I'm just so involved in ill health that am not in the mood for such things...perhaps later when am better...
I feel a little silly, but someone in the future may have a similar issue as me, and gain something from the pearls of knowledge you all kindly bestowed on me
At least you saved me from idiotically investing in stocks!
I will do some more prepping too...
    Thanks, thank you all,
    take care

You describe a scenario that is almost apocalyptic in nature, if that happened then I'd imagine it will take much longer than 12 years to recover!

I wouldn't characterise investments in gold and silver to be extraordinarily risky, but I'm not sure you're fully appreciating the risks. The prices can, and do, drop. Not too long ago gold dropped 25% in the course of less than a year. You only have a small investment so that wouldn't be an enormous loss, but don't rely on it as some kind of guarantee.

And I should also clarify that investing in stocks only makes no sense under your completely irrational belief of an upcoming apocalypse. I sincerely hope no-one reading this in the future harbours the same thoughts, as investing in stocks is actually a very wise thing to do.

Good luck with whatever you decide to do.
