Do we qualify for the £150 rebate as our council tax is paid for us by council tax benefit

My partner receives pension credit guarantee credit and as such has full council tax relief.

Should we still receive the £150 council tax rebate?

Thank you.

As far as I'm aware the rebate should be received.  As it's not about council tax it's about paying for gas and electric.  It's just that it is being paid via the council and they are using the account details that people pay their tax from to pay them the money.  If you are not paying any council tax then you need to ring them to arrange for them to pay the money - again as far as I'm aware.

  • Thank you Brie. That is what I thought, however, our local council seems to be on a go-slow!

We did receive a letter at the end of June to take to the Post Office to claim the payment. The letter was addressed to us but the contact info on the other side of the letter (the bit the Post Office needed) was for a completely different person and address! An update on their website stated new letters would be sent, and we are still waiting. Will get onto the council again on Monday morning.

Not always. I didn't have to apply for mine, it was just paid into my bank account. OP also said they received a letter at the end of June..

Indeed, in general anybody who making Council Tax payments by direct debit will have automatically received payments to their bank account.

The issue is those who have to pay nothing because their CT is fully covered by CTR and also for CT payers who pay by other methods. In those cases local authorities had to set up mechanisms for people to claim in order so that the local authority could obtain information in order to make a payment. (Sadly many believed that as they pay no CT they are not eligible for the £150 and may not have not claimed.)

In this case OP's local authority clearly has a process in place, although they appear to have mucked up hopefully it will be sorted out.

  • I don't pay council tax as meet the severe mental impairment criteria. Am I entitled to the Council Tax rebate. I have not received a letter. My house mate has. How do I claim?

You and a house mate are not going to both get a payment. If you are not named on the Council Tax bill then you are not eligible.

It's per household, not per resident. CT is levied on the property, not individuals.
The rate on your property is reduced by 25% as you are disregarded. How you divide the remainder between you is up to you.

Our council sent invites out and said to claim by a certain date, otherwise they'll pay the money towards the council tax bill. So the OP should have received an invite, if not then may have been missed by the council.
