as above, is there any way to recover an old iTunes back up that's currently on an old desktop PC unit.  iTunes is asking for the encrypted password but I'm certain it was never set. I've tried every possible combination of words/numbers that I'd use. and still no joy.

Apple were no help at all.  Is there any way of accessing the photos stored in iTunes?  Lots of my younger nieces and nephew and our dog when she was a pup.  Any advice or help gratefully appreciated

https://support.apple.com/en-gb/HT213037 - "You can't restore an encrypted backup without its password. With iOS 11 or later or iPadOS, you can make a new encrypted backup of your device by resetting the password.  If you have a device with iOS 10 or earlier, you can't reset the password.

You may want to check iCloud for backups or (if available) make use of another backup that wasn't encrypted.  Passwords don't set themselves.

Is it possible when you set the password originally your finger slipped? I've had it happen.
Is it possible when you tried to access your finger slipped, have you tried entering the password 1 key at a time in a deliberate manner so what is being entered is what you intend to enter? Long shot but this has sometimes solved my problem when I've been sure I've entered the correct password but actually didn't.
