Son is starting University in September so I am looking for recommendations for a budget laptop which will be up to the mark. I’d like to avoid any laptops where it is an issue to upgrade windows versions due to a lack of storage space. Not looking for anything too fancy over and above this requirement and would consider reconditioned. Grateful for any suggestions or ideas as to the spec I should be looking for.

Any particular OS? For Windows, you'll need minimum 8GB memory and 256GB SSD assuming no major requirement for media.  eg   New laptop and antivirus

What budget do you have in mind? And what course subject is it? What software/tasks will be needed?

Is there not a contact at the University with knowledge of the course syllabus who could advise?

If it’s mainly for note taking and writing essays, a chrome book may be a good idea. Weight is quite important if it is going to be carried around a lot.

What it'll need to be capable of might depend somewhat on the course your son is doing.
