Annual increase of £4250.55 for gas and electric can't be right! Can it? : (

I'm with OFTM too and seeing similar increase. My last 12mths usage is been totally ignored and they claim they use previous 2-3 years. How can this be right. We have actively reduced out usage as I'm sure everyone has yet they still want to use estimated usage from previous years.0

It went from a below average winter to an above average winter, Many saved 30% on gas doing nothing.mjdrae said:I'm with OFTM too and seeing similar increase. But i actively made changes and will continue to do so. Many people like my household were on furlough and kids off school previous 12 months which made most peoples usage increase... the last 12 months we are back to some normality and our bills are where they were previously. Everyone is consciously making changes yet they carry on trying to charge you over the odds with silly estimations of usage. I have 2 months left and i am almost £400 in credit and thats paying £165 per month now... without any increase.

You will soon eat into that credit once the October price hike hits and your heating gets switched on.Barnsley, South Yorkshire

As stated our household has changed... there are less people with my Daughter going to Uni and less people during the day. We also have a log burner and are well stocked with logs.My point is, we have been quoted ridiculous prices based on figures that we simply arent going to hit... how can that be right??0

Energy companies only have history of usage to go on.
They can't believe people when they say we will use xx% of energy this year because of xyz.
The alternative is to switch to whole bill variable direct debit and pay for what you use each month.
I suspect this is what a lot of people who can plans and know their usage will consider. I know we are.

From the perspective of an energy company, how do they know this? Suppose everyone tells them they'll be using much less energy to get their DD amounts reduced but then ends up with a debt they'll struggle to clear...mjdrae said:My point is, we have been quoted ridiculous prices based on figures that we simply arent going to hit... how can that be right??

As an example we know our energy usage for a mild winter and the reductions we have made to the baseload electricity in the house. We have also accounted for a cold winter and added 30% into our what if spreadsheet.
So we pay £177.70 a month all electric and by October 2023 paying that amount and a mild winter we will have £492.95 credit on our account (largely due to the £400 government payout Oct 2022)
If we have a cold winter come October 2023 we will have roughly a zero balance come October 2023
Despite all the above this is what Eon Next would like us to pay £238.07. That would mean come October 2023 and a mild winter we would be £1397.00 in credit or a cold winter £904.05 in credit.
Needless to say if Eon Next forced a DD increase we would instantly switch to monthly while bill variable DD.

Completely agree, but I just checked and it seems Outfox does not allow variable direct debit.Mstty said:Energy companies only have history of usage to go on.

@pochase what a shame.
Time for the OP to consider the three switches available
EDF SVT tariffOctoopus SVT tariff or tracker or mis of tracker and Agile depending on if they have a smart meter and fancy those tariffs
GreenEnergyUK Sparkling fixed tariff
To my knowledge they all allow whole bill variable DD0
