Just wondered whether anyone has downloaded the new version?

My current Thunderbird programme works perfectly, but the upgrade seems to offer a better experience.

https://www.thunderbird.net/en-US/

Has anyone experienced any problems downloading, or is it a seemless transition?

Thanks for comments.

Its always auto updated for me in the past, but now you bring it to my attention I see that there is an update 'waiting' for me to take action

From a post on the forum of the site you linked

"It will eventually be an automatic upgrade. We are in an initial period where we gather more version 102 feedback from users who intentionally download. After a period of collecting sufficient feedback, updates to version 102 will gradually be enabled, as we did with last year’s version 78->91.0 transition. Until then, users of version 91 will continue to receive updates to newer versions of 91."

So I'll just wait for the auto update to happen as normal

I got the update yesterday, seems to look very much like the old version.

A couple of issues I've noticed...
-- 'Compact folders' is flaky, sometimes works, usually does nothing.
-- It doesn't always put a red flag on the taskbar icon when there is unread mail.

I would never be an 'early adopter' of any software.  Let others discover any problems with it and get the bugs and glitches resolved first.

Seems neither rhyme nor reason, unless you're a techie @J_B

Mozilla changed its release schedule for Thunderbird as of version 17, which resulted in omitted major version numbers between successive releases.  https://wiki.mozilla.org/Thunderbird/New_Release_and_Governance_Model#Releases - however when a new version is released it'll be the same as Firefox ESR (extended service release).

Didn't really help either that Mozilla couldn't decide whether they wanted to develop Thunderbird or palm it off, or not develop it at all.

I think the amount of donations they receive helps them to decide.

Generally, I donate a couple of times a year as the software works well, and is worth it.

Speaking for myself, 102 is the biggest load of garbage that Thunderbird has ever released!!!

OK, I am running Win7 on a PC with a 23inch screen and TB updated automatically to 102 and then the problems and annoyances started.

The "improved" spacing on things like Favourites and all the drop down menus is a total pain and there is no way to go back to the "old" spacing. Whereas previously, Favourites could be managed to just fill the screen top to bottom, now I have to scroll up and down - it is a time-waster to do so.

I have had to  "delete and reinstall" some email accounts due to 102 having changed Authentication method away from OAuth2.

Deleted does not always get emptied when I close down and when I restart, I get a random number of actual emails appear from way back in 2013 and a random number of those emails in Deleted are marked as unread.

Filters keep failing due to "damaged or non-indexed" destination folders on random folders, even though I have never had this problem before. Resolve that by clicking on the relevant folders. Close TB at the end of the day and start again the next day and up pops the same problem but with different folders!!

I get emails with what look like the correct To and From and Subject and the body of the email is from a totally different email and that incorrect body displays in HTML.

I have no idea what the "benefit" is of the new left hand side toolbar with basic options like Get Mail, it worked perfectly well with the way it was able to be set up before 102 and the amount of screen real estate that is used by default pushes my folder structure so that I now have to scroll up and down to get to specific folders. The only way that I have been able to remedy this is to add all of my icons for things like reply, get mail etc to the menu toolbar.

None of this is consistent, except in the fact that it happens all the time. Those are the failures that I can remember whilst I have typed thus post, there definitely are more. Here is one I have just remembered. 102 randomly changes the sort parameter for random folders from "view thread, sorted" from unthreaded to threaded. Also for the Deleted folder!!!!

For the first time ever, since TB arrived, I am seriously thinking of finding another email client. Whilst some of these errors I can just about live with, the corrupted emails mentioned 3 paragraphs above mean that I have to log in to GMail to find out what is really going on with those emails.

Where do in find 'favourites'? Just had a quick look in TB 91.11.0 and can't see any mention of it and don't think I've ever used it.

    It’s probably only in 102
