I started investing in a S&S ISA at the start of this month, at the age of 26.

Later than you.  55.  I opened a stocks and shares ISA. Prior to that I focused on paying off our mortgage and paying for our daughters to go to university and helped them with house deposits.  We overpaid our pensions from our mid 20s though.

I was 22 when I opened my first S&S ISA. During my twenties and early thirties I didn’t put as much in my S&S ISAs as I could have. I concentrated mainly on building house deposits with any spare cash I had. I’ve never ignored my workplace pensions though.

When I was in my early 20s it was easy to make a good return on Cash ISAs and savings accounts. By good return I mean a couple of percent above inflation. If I was 22 now with the current economic climate I think I’d be focussing a lot more on investments than I did then.

I concentrated on my house deposit first too, I’ve saved my target amount, so now I’m able to invest consistently. I invest £200 a month. I also save £75 towards the costs of buying a house and £25 in my holiday fund a month. 😊

I started contributing to a personal pension at the age of 26 as my company didn't give me a workplace pension. I opened my first ISA at age 45.

Thank Margaret Thatcher for my start in investing at about the age of 30. Her sale of the "family silver" with a host of privatisations which began in the 80`s enabled us to buy our present house without a mortgage. It got me interested in investing and I then moved on to a widespread range of investments.

After moving back to the UK after five years living abroad and not having contributed to a pension, I was contracting and started investing via a SIPP.

I bought my first house in 1989 with mortgage of £30K (just as mortgage rate  was about to peak at an unbelievable 15.4%). Mortgage increased to £50K in 1993 with a later purchase. I saved madly from income and paid off the mortgage in 1997. From 1997 (aged 40) onwards I then diverted surplus income into (first) PEPs, then S and S ISAs from 1999. Now aged 65.
