Many celebrities love to settle in our area but this isn’t a new phenomenon. In 1880 the French Empress Eugenie bought Farnborough Hill where she lived in exile for 40 years.
In a new book entitled ‘Empress Eugenie, a Footnote History’ , Farnham author Joanne Watson tells her intriguing story. Regarded when she opened the Suez Canal in 1869 as one of the most famous women in the world, a few months later Eugenie had to flee Paris during the Franco Prussian war.
A beautiful young woman, the leader of World Fashion and great friend of Queen Victoria, Eugenie was a familiar figure in Farnborough. Her legacy is the Imperial Mausoleum in St Michael’s Abbey which holds her tomb and those of her husband, Napoleon III and son.
