Hello all, my grandmother recently passed away and while going through her documents we found a note in her handwriting stating a well known insurance company, a policy number and an amount of £48,000.

My mother called the insurance company and explained the situation and she was asked for the policyholder’s name. She gave my grandmother’s name but was told that was not the policyholder. She then gave my deceased grandfather’s name but it was not him either.
She then asked if it was another relative but was told she couldn’t be given any more information unless she had the policyholder’s name and basically to stop guessing

obviously we’re now intrigued to find out what this is, and it’s a significant amount of money!

Any tips on how it might be possible to find out? Are there any experts who can help? Or is this a lost cause?

The policyholder is not necessarily the life assured.      It would also appear that your grandmother was neither policy owner nor life assured as the insurer would be starting the claims process.

Check the bank statement to see if the direct debit was going out.     No direct debit on that size of sum assured usually means the policy is no longer in force or the policy is owned by someone else (maybe another family member or business partner).

The insurance company may be more willing to provide information to a solicitor.  With a potential large payment the additional cost could be worth it.
