Car Insurance for Son

22 Posts

So my son is hopefully going to pass his test soon and want to start driving his car on the full license but as we all know new driver insurance is a bit silly cost wise especially without a Black box or telematics, which in my opinion are a bit ropey with what and how they gather & report data.
Anyway it would appear from a quick look at the comparison sites that it would be more economical for me to insure the car and have him as an additional but main driver, rather than him insure it and me being the additional driver.
So if I was to do this how does the insurance and any No Claims work if he was to actually hit something that resulted in a claim?
i.e. If he was driving and at fault in an incident how would effect me as the policy holder?

I assume though that if I went this route though I could limit my liability in NCD stakes by protecting it like I would on any policy I've ever had?
Independent of the NCD aspect, if it's your policy and your son has an accident you will both need to declare the incident on all your policies going forwards - he will have had the accident but you will have made the claim.
Whereas if your son is the policyholder and has an accident it will be both his accident and his claim - you will not have to declare it on your own insurance unless you were actually the one driving your son's car at the time of the accident.
He was with Tesco black box and never had any issues at all.
