Adult Social Care Changes - Oct 2023

Hi, Hopefully posted in right forum. I know the adult social care reforms will start from next October, but I'm struggling to find out how this will affect people beforehand. The £86k limit will kick in from then, and once reached, the cost of care would be taken over by the L.A. What happens though if a self funder currently living in a care home reaches the threshold paid out before October 2023 ? Is that amount taken into account, or is it separate with the £86k monetary clock only ticking from 01/10/2023 ? Appreciate and help and clarity on this.

I believe the £86k limit starts from October 2023 - anything spent on care before then will not form part of this limit. I'm not an expert though so happy to defer to more knowledgeable respondents.

As long as you’re reading it that care is just the care element and not the “hotel” costs which will still be payable. And probably reviewed upwards before then if costs keep rising as they are at the moment.

The cap will not apply retrospectively (ie costs accrued before October 2023 will not count towards the cap).

All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.

Interesting. My father's in a residential care home and we didn't receive a breakdown of charges ie "care" charges  and "hotel" charges. Does the parliamentary briefing enlighten regarding that?
Compared to the costs for domiciliary social care, residential care works out cheaper , although admittedly it's impossible to know how many hours of actual care someone receives in a given period.
