What are " Starter Arrears "

Started part time work this month, I've looked at my payroll and it mentions " Starter Arrears "

Any idea what this actually means ? I've googled it but cannot find it anywhere. Could it have something to do with the training/induction day ?

Are you meant to be paid weekly or monthly?
If weekly, what would you expect to be paid (gross, before deductions) at the time you were paid?
If this is your second payslip are you being paid more than with the first one?

I get paid at the end of every month, it is my first payslip

So does the gross amount appear to be less than you were expecting for the hours contracted to be worked in April?
Did you do any shadowing/induction sessions before officially starting?
Is the amount against "starters arrears" a negative or positive figure?

If answering the above doesn't lead to an understanding, ask your employer.

Does this first monthly pay slip cover a period longer than one month?

Either way, I don't think "starter arrears" is a common term with universal established meaning so the OP would be perfectly fine asking payroll to explain.

And what is against this on your payslip? Are you salaried or hourly rate? When did you start in the month?

New Starter Arrears does appear to be a common thing in the NHS, councils etc payslips as a possible additional payment type but the docs dont explain what it means. At a guess it'd be if you are salaried, started after the cut off for the last months payroll and so the initial payment is for this month and part of last month (ie there is an element of arrears they are paying you).

That's what I thought but the OP hasn't worked in earlier months - unless they did shadowing/induction which fell into the earlier period.
And they haven't said how the gross pay compares with what they were expecting - as I guess they know their pay rate and how much of the month they will have worked.

I had a full day induction/training on the 28th of March. This could explain it.
however the amount i'm being paid for the induction ( if thats what the starter arrears are ) is actually higher than the amount I would have earnt had it been a normal 6 hour shift

Even if it is a common term, it's perfectly fine to ask what it means if you don't know it.
