Large bill to pay and cash ready - should I open a new reward credit card to pay it?

As per the title, I have a bill in the region of £30k to pay in a couple of months for which I have the cash ready. I can pay once or as a number of smaller payments.  I wondered if I should open a rewards credit card and pay via that to get say Avios or something similar.

Would that even work?

It will work if you can pay the bill by your chosen credit card and it's treated as a purchase.

What product or service (roughly) is the bill for? If the card provider treats it as a 'purchase' then yes it'll work - if they treat it as a 'cash transaction' - then it might not. If you're unsure which category it would fall in, you might need to speak to your chosen provider to be sure it gets classed as a purchase.

Also consider the Chase current account for 1% cashback.
Check your intended purchase against their list of exclusions.

Also worth considering whether it's something the s75 protection would be useful for, even without reward points/cashback.  But yes, in general it should work unless it's considered a cash transaction or something 'excluded' by the card T&Cs.

All else being equal, I'd use a credit card, either for the full value or at least a portion of it.

Do you research on reward cards (section on MSE).
if you plan on travelling an Amex card would probably be best as you get a companion ticket on a spend of 10K. Also don't forget the 2 free lounge passes and discounts on future visits.

Only issue you may have is your credit limit.
I tend to pay of a large purchase as soon as i've made the transaction where possible.

If you don't want AMEX look at a Mastercard where you earn Avios
