Pay rise and back pay.

I get paid on the 15th of every month.
In March I got a small pay rise with a back pay from April 2021.
While it was a nice surprise, in reality the payrise is only about £20/month but the backpay will create havoc with the HB and TC since I couldn’t update them since I didn’t even know it myself.
To make everything more twisted, I am waiting for my UC assessment and will have to pay back an overpayment to HB and HMRC even though I am not a ‘customer’ anymore.

Was it a fault of my HR’s department or is this simply how payrises and backpays work? As a surprise / out of the blue?

edit - *the overpayment from HB and Tax credits is because of the back pay.

Mine was notified about two weeks before it arrived but only because it created an issue with pension payments. Normally it just arrives when it arrives.

That is about how it works for me too - they want to pay it 'as soon as possible' so don't know far in advance themselves.  Will you have to make backpayments?  For tax this is just looked at as though you have one well paid month - it belongs to the month you get it, not the month you earned it.

Oh that is interesting. I phoned HMRC with the latest figure so they can properly close my claim and waiting to see what happens. Hopefully the calculations will be properly done and fair.
