Gpay and Chip & Pin?

Hi all, I've tried contacting my bank about this query but they wouldn't give an off script or relevant answer. I have just set up Gpay, in the hopes of not needing to carry my wallet all of the time but still having access to money should i need it. I am wondering though, and can't find an answer anywhere (not even the bank); does the security feature on contactless cards (where you need to enter your pin every so many transactions)  apply to contactless using Gpay?

I have never been required to enter a password for purchases on Google Pay.

I have also done a search using the Google search engine, and it says authorisation for purchases is never required with Google Pay.

You can find that Gpay will decline transactions. So I would always make sure you have a alternative form of payment.

Gpay does require authorisation, just like any other payment at banks end.  So bank can easily decline a payment if they see fit.

I have only had GPay decline on one day and have 5 credit cards linked.  Tried a £240 payment and it failed, luckily I had the card so used chip and PIN.  Then went to the filling station and it failed again for £60, the cashier said they had quite a few declines that day so it may have been a system glitch rather than a genuine decline of GPay, the sale went through contactless OK.

I've had several 'declines' from Gpay in about 6 months of use. I would not go anywhere without an alternative form of payment. I have no idea whether the issue is Gpay itself or the underlying card(s).

Having said that I've never seen a message that it wouldn't authorise and the PIN have to be used (with the card presumably).

You shouldn't need to as the fingerprint or face ID is the PIN. Google/Apple Pay uses something you have (phone) and something unique (fingerprint/face). Chip & PIN uses the card and the PIN.
Whereas standard contactless only uses something you have there is no second thing.

I have occasionally been asked to re-enter my fingerprint at the time of purchase - but that was with my "fall-back" card (and never with Amex which I use most of the time).

This is interesting. I have had to re-enter my fingerprint on my default GPay card, but always assumed that it was because my screen had locked.

I've been using GPay as my routine payment system for last year or so.. So much that I no longer carry a card (or cash) for daily use.  I would still take a card if i anticipated a major spend  just in case. Very occasionaly I get a "decline" - I find that stopping the app, and clearing the cache, will fix that - so I think it's just an app glitch.  I must unlock my phone with fingerprint,  before Gpay will operate.  I have never been asked to enter a PIN with Gpay.   It's superior ro card because of that extra security and  you get an instant receipt on your phone. Also one less thing to carry, or lose.

Ah. I've sometimes had to apply a fingerpirnt, using my default card, even when the screen is unlocked, usually for larger amounts.

I don't have to unlock my phone, it can be locked and the screen 'asleep' and it still works. Occasionally it doesn't work, then I unlock my phone and it works. In Hotel chocolat the other day even that didn't work so I opened the Gpay app and tried agian, then it worked (it was only around £25).
  • I've not had a decline with GPay in several years.

The only issue was when I used Amex in a particular location (pub/restaurant chain) only accepted Amex via Chip & Pin. I just selected another non-Amex card and it worked fine.

Other considerations are access to cash or where card is physically required like Pay at Pump.
