That would also be a concern if you are in charge of a trainee.

Our line manager has us undertake stuff that isn't really our job.. just stuff that he had quited for and won. 

In this instance it was removing a steel structure. Not my area, nor something me and the trainee would ever be doing typically.

Putting yourself into a potentialy unsafe handling situation is one thing but being responsible for someone else's H&S is a serious responsibility.

Yoire missing the point.
The new starter had nothing to do with the job.
He had nothing to do with any lifting or any part of the job that I THINK may have caused an injury.

I was not even the senior person on site that day . That was my manager..
