The item is faulty. You could have let the courier have it and then wait to see if the buyer finds out. If they don't, great! If they do, the courier (that they organised) could have damaged it or whatever. HOWEVER, you have been nice - although a quick message before cancelling could have been better as the buyer may have said they don't mind it being damaged.
You don't see anything wrong with the "advice" you have posted above? The OP advising their buyer that item was faulty wasn't them being "nice" as you put it. It was them doing what was legally required as the goods no longer matched their description..
With an attitude like yours, you are the type of person that I sincerely hope that I never have to deal with on eBay or in any other financial transaction.
