Dodgy roaming deal from three

Just started roaming in France on my pre-EU charging SIM contract. 24 months so protected from roaming charges for a while yet.

After spotting I was roaming, unsolicited marketing text from three arrives in France offering me an early upgrade to a fresh contract. Great deals, lower monthly charge than current and more data. However, would be on new terms so my EU data would come with a daily charge.

Am I being cynical in assuming the two are connected? PS No I’m not.

Anyone else been nudged to a “post EU protection” contract?

Worse. I've been a Three customer for years and after a couple of recent nudging "you're out of contract, you can choose something new and shiny!"-type emails, which I ignored because the current contract suits me fine for now, today they've emailed to say my existing SIM-only contract is no longer available and they will be moving me on to a new one from next month. That of course means that they can start charging me for roaming from May as I'm on a "new" contract.

The real kicker is that in order to stay with the one-month rolling contract option that I currently have, they are literally doubling the monthly price, as well as charging me for the roaming! Go Roam was the only reason I've put up with poor customer service and shonky coverage in the past, so time to vote with my feet.

I've had the same message and have until 24th January to either accept the new tariff or leave.

I shall be moving to ID Mobile who still offer EU roaming as part of the package and use the Three network.

I received the same email a couple of days ago. I took out a cheap SIM only contract for my daughter in November 2020. Now, barely a year later, Three have given me 30 days to move to another (non roaming) tariff. Strangely no emails for my wife or sons’s SIMs which were taken out at the same time.

Question: For simplicity, I have all 5 of our family SIM contacts in my name (all on Three). If I now move 5 SIM cards to another provider (such as ID Mobile), will this adversely affect my credit report (5 hard searches?)

It would be one hard search if you apply for the 5 lines at the same time
I spent 25 years in the mobile industry, from 1994 to 2019. Worked for indies as well as the big networks, in their stores also in contact centres. I also hold a degree in telecoms engineering so I like to think I know what I’m talking about 😂

That's a good point - thanks for that. Unfortunately, O2 (who I have chosen to move to following todays EU roaming announcement) don't allow you to put more that one SIM in your cart. I spoke with their support and apparently this is by design - each SIM requires a unique Direct Debit, etc, - and so "the computer says no".

They say that there's no way to avoid multiple credit checks.
