EON - Not Listening to Meter Readings

Hello,
So for a while our house was unoccupied while it was being practically rebuilt. The previous occupants had left and we had taken responsibility of the home. We notified EON of this and they proceeded to estimate that we were using the same electric as the previous occupant (even though we were empty). So when we moved in we joined British Gas. However British Gas took the previous readings from EON as a starting point. Thankfully they took the real readings quickly and fixed the issue (so now our bills arent wildly out of wack).
The main issue has been the contention for the last 6 months. We tell EON to contact British Gas to send them the real meter readings and they say they havent got it 6 times. The next time we send them directly the info from British Gas. They ignore this also and say we still owe them money. We have thus far refused to pay and they have the account on hold until its resolved but it seems never ending. We phoned today (our little monthly tradition) to say they have resolved the issue. The ending meter readings? Oh the exact same it was the last 6 times they "resolved it". The fact is we have paid hundreds of pounds into this account and on our estimation we know that we have overpaid GREATLY on the Electricity (nobody was in the house) and a minor amount on Gas.
How do I stop this circle? Is it Ombudsman time and raise a complaint? I just want them to listen to British Gas who has our opening readings. Their readings dont even make sense yet they are still ignoring us. They have also impacted our credit score rating with them raising it to a collections agency which have now returned it to EON as it clearly isnt a solvable debt for now.
Thanks!

Sorry but it's a bit confusing.
You bought the place and Eon was the provider. Presumably you took readings when you took possession.
Eon was the provider through out the time the house wasn't occupied and you assume there was no gas or electric being used as there was no one there (unlikely to be zero but maybe minimal)
Then you move in and switch to BG and presumably took reading so you knew they would agree with what Eon gave BG.
So who is the problem with? Eon I guess. But also BG? And you're not paying anything despite being told you owe. Or are you paying BG based on your current usage? Does BG agree with your readings?I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on Debt Free Wannabe, Old Style Money Saving and Pensions boards. Ah sorry! So EON was the provider until we moved in (this was in May). We told them when we got the house that we were taking over the bills and we would stay with them for now.
We decided to go with British Gas and gave them the new meter readings. EON disagreed and British Gas stuck with EON's meter readings. This is totally understandable. The electric was considerably higher and they would have believed the previous company.
We sent British Gas the new readings and when they serviced the Boiler they also agreed with the new readings (Then replaced it all with smart meter things) so now we are happily with British Gas (as much as you would be with an energy supplier) and paying them monthly. EON however haven't believed us nor British Gas. They are still persistent that we owe them about £300 ish even though we have sent them the meter readings and its now well past the point that we could have taken a picture (My fault).
We are paying BG our current usage. They agree and have updated the readings.
EON however arent listening to BG or their readings. They sent a request which BG have replied with frequently and EON still are not listening to us. We arent saying we owe them nothing. There was certainly work going on and the Gas is certainly owing but the Electric should easily cover this and leave us in Credit.
Its EON we have the issue with. BG have been nothing but helpful in responding to our queries and all our bills state our opening readings as the correct opening.0
