Luton man's house stolen

Many of you will have seen this on the news - a man in Luton, who was working away, came home to find that someone had bought his house off a fraudster pretending to be him and made off with the money.  Even worse, the house now legally belongs to the new "owner" and all the original owner can do is to sue the solicitor who did not spot the fraudster.  I've seen stories like this before but I'm still no wiser as to how to prevent this happening.  Anyone know?

You can put an alert on Land registry which will alert you of anything happening regarding your (or any) property

Worryingly I'm not sure how you protect your property in Scotland and Northern Ireland.

Thanks everyone for your comments.  I hadn't realised that there was already a thread on this (had done a search but it didn't bring it up).  For anyone who is interested, there's a very good piece on it - plus a link to the YouAndYours investigation with Shari Vahl (via BBC Sounds) which contains info about how to be alert - mainly use the Land Registry alert scheme.  Properties that are vulnerable tend to be empty or rented out, and with no mortgage.  There's a link to the piece on the BBC news website.
